Character Information
Name: The Guardian
Series: Hyper Light Drifter
Appearance: Portrait. Sprite.
Age: Ambiguous. 30s at most.
Canon Point: After their death in the South Zone.
Canon History: Wiki
Prior to the events of the game the Guardian had a family, a wife and child. All three of them suffer from the unknown sickness that plagues the world of Hyper Light Drifter but one day the Guardian returns to their home to find it has claimed the lives of his family. After laying them to rest the Guardian sets out on a journey to follow the Jackal and rid the world of the Immortal Cell. Curiously Judgement takes a different form to torment the Guardian with when it chooses to appear: unlike the Drifter who sees it as a large and vaguely humanoid creature, the Guardian sees it as a monstrous centipede.
At some point the Guardian takes residence in Central Town and saves the Merchant and his companion from danger in the wilderness. It is clear they also have the respect of the people who populate Central Town.
One day when patrolling the wilderness the Guardian stumbles across the Drifter, who had fallen unconscious due to a combination of their own illness flaring up and the appearance of Judgement. Rather then leaving them to their fate the Guardian instead chooses to set up camp to take care of them, eventually bring the Drifter to their home in Central Town to rest. Before leaving to resume their own journey the Guardian leaves behind a map for the Drifter to take when they awaken.
From then on the Guardian is found in all four Zones and occasionally in their house. When interacted with in the North, East and West Zones they will provide helpful information on where to find the Modules to open the path to the Abyss, marking the locations on the Drifter's map. But it is once the Drifter is able to enter the South Zone that things take a turn for the worse for the Guardian.
As time passed their illness had been becoming worse and worse, until it finally catches up to them in the Barren Hills. Soon after entering the South Zone the Drifter can find the Guardian surrounded by the corpses of those who attacked the pink-clad drifter, kneeling on the ground and coughing up blood. Their last actions are to mark the remaining Modules on the Drifter's map before telling them the story of the Guardian's family. Only then do they finally succumb to their illness, leaving behind their cloak, weapon and companion sprite for the Drifter to take.
Canon Personality: The pink clad drifter's main trait is neatly encapsulated by their title: the Guardian. They are the first person that the Drifter meets that is not an enemy or otherwise hostile, electing to help them when they fall unconscious due to their sickness rather then leave them to their fate. A reoccurring theme of the Guardian is that they are help when non often is found. They have earned the respect of those in Central Town by saving those lost and hurt in the wilderness and they help the Drifter along by handing over the locations of the Modules in each Zone. They never ask for anything in return for such acts and thus does it simply out of the kindness of their heart. The world of HLD is a harsh one but the Guardian is the odd person out as they offer their help freely and does not appear to care if they help someone who seems unwelcome in the town at best.
However it would be a mistake to assume the Guardian is soft because they are kind. Like many of their fellow drifters the Guardian has learned to be driven and hard in some cases, answering danger with the swift answer of their weapons and is often found by the corpses of those who attacked them in other Zones. Certainly they will become involved if someone is in danger, as was the case with the merchant and his friend, but their help appears to go only so far. Their help is a vital but passive one for the Drifter and they never directly fight alongside the player over the game. Heartless they are not, but the Guardian has their own journey to make and they stick to it until the end. The Guardian's determination to fight against Judgement and their own rapidly advancing sickness is admirable, to the point that they force themself to stay conscious until the Drifter finds them and only pass on once they hand over the locations of the Modules.
Their's is a heart of kindness but also tragedy. The Guardian's motivation for following the Jackal was not one completely spurred on by their own sickness but by the death of their wife and child. It is something that they largely keep to themself and only speak of it to the Drifter while on their deathbed. They are not talkative by nature and often keeps their dialog to the matter on hand and even when found in their house, the Guardian is never once seen resting but rather tinkering around with things they have likely found across their journey. Perhaps they keep their hands busy so they do not think of the past but their family's memory is clearly what they wish to pass on to the Drifter along with the last Modules.
The Guardian is a kind soul tempered by the tragedy their life has handed to them. Their last act alive is to offer the Drifter their final bit of help, passing on the hope that the Immortal Cell's sickness could be ended for good. For one more day...even if they will never be able to see it.
Personality Shifts: None. The Guardian can be spared their fate of dying from their sickness if the Drifter does not speak to them in the North, East and West Zones before meeting them in the South, but there is no indication of any change in the Guardian beyond their life being preserved.
Abilities: The Guardian is both a skilled swordsman and is a decent shot with a pistol. They are also handy to have around for mapping and scouting as they are able to find the locations of each Module, many of which are hidden underground and in various nooks and crannies across the lands.
Dash: This ability allows the Guardian to move at a high-speed pace, leaving behind after-images of themself, which allows them to move across small gaps in the terrain and dodge incoming attacks. They cannot dash infinitely however and once they run out of stamina they will have to take a short rest. Their cloak (detailed in Inventory) shortens the time they have to take to recover, however.
Inventory:
Companion sprite: Like the Drifter, the Guardian is in possession of a companion sprite that allows them to operate certain switches, doors and lifts. It also contains a map that shows where the Modules that need to be collected to open a way to the Abyss. The companion sprite's map will be blank upon their arrival and the Guardian will have to map the islands of Lifeaftr from scratch.
Hard-light blade and pistol: A red blade made of hard-light that can retract when not in use. The Guardian's pistols carries six shots and does not possess actual bullets. It is recharged when the Guardian hits enemies or objects with their blade. It deals one damage per shot.
Cloak: The Guardian's cloak carries the ability that allows the wearer to recover their stamina quicker. While the Guardian cannot use it to dash infinitely they will be able to dash again sooner without a longer cool-down period.
